FRIDE’s new policy brief on Algerian Salafism

EPD’s partner organisation FRIDE  has published its latest policy brief on the variants of Algerian Salafism, a resurgent ideology in North Africa thanks to the state’s failures to tackle political and economic stagnation. Though the ideology is mostly apolitical, some controversial figures have founded Salafi parties, albeit without widespread support. As Salafism rises, its Islamist rivals are witnessing a drop in their popularity, while Sufi beliefs remain, for many, beyond acceptable Islamic jurisprudence. The state is now attempting to overhaul its religious policy, but risks discrediting the tolerant Sufism it seeks to promote. You can read the report here.
